• Skin is a surface upon which to project and reflect one’s identity, ego, stigmatization, vanity, status, gender, race and more. In order to reinforce these signs and social codes, skin can be pierced, tattooed, lifted, liposuctioned, tanned and marked. At other times, it is left to its own deterioration with disease, ageing and disfigurement. Whatever is reflected on the skin’s surface, skin is this very material, according to Connor, like “a clay, fabric, membrane, armour, powder, breath and light”.
